iPhone will allow background processes?
When Apple initially announced the iPhone SDK, there was much dismay over the lack of background process capabilities, which disallows third-party applications to, for instance, notify the user of incoming instant messages or other network operations. So we question now – is iPhone playing catch-up with Android, and other smart phone platforms? While Apple promised to have some kind of background processing with its “push” technology, we did not see it coming to life after some lengthy period of time. It seems that background process will be allowed in iPhone 3.0. If the rumors that iPhone will get an updated with faster application and graphics processors. The increased power provided by those chips could make it much easier for the device to run multiple applications without noticeable performance difference.
MacRumors thinks the background processing would be limited for users of the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, but also thinks the user could select which applications run in the background which can be a significant improvement anyway.
