Smartphones outsell dumbphones phones in Japan. What’s in iPhone vs. Android future
There were a lot of news about how iPhone is not popular in Japan to an extent that it is offered for free by Japanese carriers. Later, the analysis that produced those rumors was proven to be wrong. And actually, according to more a recent survey from a trusted source, cellphone sales are plummeting in Japan but sales of smartphones have grown 80% in the past year, with Apple clearly in the lead. The apple factor is not as important as the overall statistics of smartphones outperforming the dumbphones by such a large margin. I bet it is pretty safe to assume that te same trend is happening all over the world.
Is Japan prepared for Android? It is quite strange that technology savvy and very enthusiastic Japan does not have a few Android powered devices already. It will be interesting to see how the competition will unveil. My guess is that iPhone may still be much more successful since it has slicker interface and which is much more important – much larger selection of quality application. And while Android is appealing for many applications being free, Japanese usually don’t sweat on spending for technology gadgets.
