GeoTag application is using Android mobile platform and was initially developed for Android Developers Challenge (ADC).
The application allows to place geo aware media and text tags. It also allows to rank geo locations
We are looking forward to developing the application further.
GeoTag application allows users to place GEO aware TAGs (aka TAG items) – in a form of basic types of information: text, images, audio and video (with possibility to extend to other types). The TAGs may be either private or public. With the aid of this application, users can generate GEO aware content which can be then privately or publically viewed.
This application employs two main features of Android enabled phone:
1. GPS capabilities let users generate and locate TAGs which are close to specific location of the application user.
2. “Always on connectivity” allows users to generate and/or access the content on web-servers seamlessly, while providing social capabilities of commenting and ranking the content which in turn results in a more information rich content for the end users.
Presented application is a prototype and thus several options remained unimplemented and unaddressed. The prototype however shows main functionality (even if the implementation was not to a full extent).
For the future development, we see the following aspects as most interesting:
1. Development of a website to support content generation and usage not only from Android powered handheld devices, but also from web.
2. Development of features to support and stimulate social interaction like:
a. Social bookmarking of the content
b. Personal messaging
c. Content sharing
d. Possibility to define more fine grained accessibility to generated content (right now only 2 options: Public or Private). We would like to integrate “People on my contact list” and/or “Friends” etc…
3. Integration of a map view with additional GEO functionality.
4. While viewing a TAG item (video/audio/text/image) possibility to view it on a map and get directions from user’s current location.
5. Possibility to import content from other aggregation services (picasa, flickr, facebook albums, youtube etc…). The content may already contain GEO data or may not. In the latter case, our application will provide a convenient method to add GEO data to existing content.
